THE OPPORTUNITY

General Summary:

The President & CEO of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children provides overall strategic and operational leadership to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and associated entities. The CEO has overall responsibility for planning, program and service growth, and operational, financial, clinical, and patient experience performance for the hospital. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provides strategic leadership fosters high level performance in the delivery of health care.
• Maintains effective and collaborative relationships with the medical staff that inspire loyalty, ensures the ability to meet the health needs of the community and advances quality, patient safety and patient satisfaction.
• Works with corporate constituents and hospital leadership to maintain an organized system of management and controls that ensure smooth function of hospital/health system operations, timely accomplishment of goals, and physical, financial and human resource viability and success.
• Ensures best practice, evidence-based approaches to consistently deliver exceptional, well-coordinated and integrated care that delivers high level outcomes and patient satisfaction.
• Works with the Tower Health CEO and the Corporate Planning department to develop strategic plans for the hospital that ensure top performance and fosters market and program growth that aligns with system strategy.
• Develops, implements and executes operational plans that ensure timely strategic goal achievement.
• Works with leadership, human resources, and corporate human resources to provide a quality work experience that fosters strong employee engagement.
• Works with the Tower Health CEO and corporate staff to develop strategic partnerships as identified.
• Provides input into payor relations strategies and agreements.
• Utilizes financial and analytical skills to lead, monitor and take actions that ensure the hospital’s financial stability and long-term success.
• Ensures the hospital is appropriately resourced from a capital and labor perspective.
• Fosters strong community relations and develops collaborative partnerships that aligns with corporate strategy, advances the hospital, and contributes to the health and well-being of the community/communities served.
• Manages the functions of the hospital in alignment with established targets and organizational culture.
• Works with the hospital board of trustees to in the delivery of established goals.

Company Background & Culture

In September 2019, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children was purchased jointly by Tower Health and Drexel University. Tower and Drexel formed an ownership group named STC Healthcare Partners, LLC, of which each organization owns 50%.

Recognition

 Tower Health Transplant Institute

 Tower Health Transplant Institute has been organized and will become the new home for the nationally recognized kidney and liver transplant program formerly located at Hahnemann University Hospital.

The program's team of renowned surgeons, hepatologists, and nephrologists have joined the Tower Health Medical Group and will provide services in West Reading and Philadelphia. The transplant team surgeons -- who have performed more than 3,000 organ transplants -- will perform kidney and liver transplants at the state-of-the-art Reading Hospital HealthPlex, one of the most technologically advanced surgical facilities in the state. Inpatient services will be provided at Tower Health - Reading Hospital and Tower Health - Chestnut Hill Hospital, with outpatient services at Reading Hospital and in Center City Philadelphia. The Tower Health Transplant Institute will also include the Center for Liver Disease that was part of the Hahnemann program.

"With the unfortunate closure of Hahnemann, our goal was to create a home for this nationally-ranked kidney and liver transplant program so it could continue serving patients in eastern Pennsylvania and surroundings areas," said Clint Matthews, president and CEO of Tower Health. While at Hahnemann, the Transplant program became the only 5-star-rated kidney transplant program in Pennsylvania and the third best kidney transplant program in the nation as ranked by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients, based on patient survival with a functioning kidney one year after transplant.

David J. Reich, MD, Medical Director of the Tower Health Transplant Institute and Professor of Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine, noted that "along with internationally distinguished hepatologist, Santiago J. Muñoz, MD, and nephrologist, Karthik M. Ranganna, MD, our entire group is delighted to remain a team and to join the preeminent Tower Health system that is setting national standards for healthcare quality and patient satisfaction. We are deeply committed to excellence in clinical care, improving access to transplant services, and to the expanding academic mission of Tower Health." Dr. Muñoz is Medical Director of Liver Transplant and the Center for Liver Disease, Tower Health Transplant Institute and The Donald Berkowitz Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. Ranganna is Medical Director of Kidney Transplant, Tower Health Transplant Institute and Associate Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Within the Transplant Institute, the Center for Liver Disease will provide comprehensive care and leading-edge therapies to manage and treat a variety of liver diseases. “We are pleased to have a new home at Tower Health that will allow us to care for our patients with liver disease without interruption," said Dr. Muñoz. "And, we are excited to work with Tower Health on advancing liver disease services in the region."

Pending approval by UNOS (the Unified Network of Organ Sharing), transplants could begin by the end of 2019. Outpatient services, such as patient pre-surgical evaluation and monitoring and transplant follow-up will begin in September. Communications are underway with patients about the new locations for their care and how to ensure uninterrupted care.

Reading Hospital Receives Disease Specific Certification in Pediatric Asthma from The Joint Commission

 Reading Hospital earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval® for Pediatric Asthma Certification. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.

 Reading Hospital underwent a rigorous on-site review on May 28 where Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards as well as with asthma specific requirements. Clinical practice guidelines and performance measures also were assessed.

 "At Reading Hospital, we pride ourselves on the high-quality care we provide to our youngest patients," said Gregory Sorensen, MD, Tower Health Chief Medical Officer. "Our electronic health records shows that asthma affects more than 5,000 of our pediatric patients and it was important to the team that we demonstrate our expertise in asthma care for the patients and their families we care for."

Tower Health and Drexel University College of Medicine Break Ground on New Four-Year Regional Campus

On June 17, Tower Health and Drexel University held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Drexel University College of Medicine at Tower Health, a four- year regional campus in West Reading. Clint Matthews, Tower Health President and CEO; John Fry, Drexel University President; and Daniel V. Schidlow, MD, Dean, Drexel College of Medicine spoke about this milestone for the future of the medical school.

Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM) at Tower Health will feature state-of-the-art technology - as well as traditional classrooms, learning communities, and lecture halls. The facility will include traditional and nontraditional instructional venues where students will advance their medical skills and education via simulated patient rooms, anatomy laboratories, and simulation labs to promote interdisciplinary education with residents, physicians, and nurses When fully operational, the campus will have capacity to educate and train 200 medical students.

"Tower Health is focused on taking care of all the communities we serve," said Matthews. "Our collaboration with Drexel University further enhances our ongoing commitment to our academic mission by educating the physicians of tomorrow while also having a positive economic impact in Berks County."

Drexel University medical students will benefit from the addition of a new regional campus in an area that is experiencing economic growth, while studying medicine at the largest hospital between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Tower Health and Drexel University first announced plans to develop a regional campus near Reading Hospital in April 2018. A 20-year academic agreement was signed between the two organizations in February 2019, and on May 29, 2019, twenty third year DUCOM medical students began their core clinical rotations at Reading Hospital.

Drexel University College of Medicine

Drexel University College of Medicine represents the consolidation of two venerable medical schools with rich and intertwined histories: Hahnemann Medical College and Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania.
